Rising cyber offences in the MMR

The Mumbai and Thane commissionerates report a sharp rise in UPI/net-banking fraud, investment scams, sextortion, phishing and online defamation. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Information Technology Act, 2000, victims have strong civil and criminal remedies.

Step 1 — Freeze the money trail (Golden Hour)

Immediately call 1930 (Cyber Crime Helpline) or file at cybercrime.gov.in. Reports within the first hour let banks freeze the recipient wallet.

Step 2 — Formal complaint

  • Cyber Police Station at BKC (Mumbai) or Thane Cyber Cell
  • Written complaint with UTR/UPI IDs, screenshots, bank statements
  • Insist on a CCTNS acknowledgement
  • Section 66/66C/66D IT Act — hacking, identity theft, cheating by personation
  • BNS provisions on cheating and defamation
  • Civil suit for damages and takedown
  • Writ petition before the Bombay High Court against intermediaries under IT Rules, 2021
