Rising cyber offences in the MMR
The Mumbai and Thane commissionerates report a sharp rise in UPI/net-banking fraud, investment scams, sextortion, phishing and online defamation. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and the Information Technology Act, 2000, victims have strong civil and criminal remedies.
Step 1 — Freeze the money trail (Golden Hour)
Immediately call 1930 (Cyber Crime Helpline) or file at cybercrime.gov.in. Reports within the first hour let banks freeze the recipient wallet.
Step 2 — Formal complaint
- Cyber Police Station at BKC (Mumbai) or Thane Cyber Cell
- Written complaint with UTR/UPI IDs, screenshots, bank statements
- Insist on a CCTNS acknowledgement
