Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Justice Joymalya Bagchi for Elevation

In its meeting on 6th March 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium deliberated on the elevation of Chief Justices and senior Judges from various High Courts for appointment to the Supreme Court of India. Following a thorough evaluation of judicial merit, integrity, and competence, the Collegium has recommended Justice Joymalya Bagchi, a distinguished Judge of the Calcutta High Court, for appointment as a Supreme Court Judge.

Judicial Career and Contributions

Justice Joymalya Bagchi began his tenure as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court on 27th June 2011. His judicial journey included a transfer to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on 4th January 2021, before his repatriation to the Calcutta High Court on 8th November 2021. Over 13 years, he has presided over complex legal matters, significantly contributing to the development of jurisprudence across various domains of law.

Potential Chief Justice of India

With the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir in 2013, the Calcutta High Court has not had representation in the office of the Chief Justice of India (CJI). Based on seniority considerations, Justice Bagchi is expected to assume the role of CJI upon the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on 25th May 2031. He will hold office as the Chief Justice of India until 2nd October 2031, ensuring a tenure of over six years as a Supreme Court Judge before taking charge as the head of the Indian judiciary.

Seniority and Regional Representation

Presently, the Supreme Court Bench has only one serving Judge from the Calcutta High Court, making Justice Bagchi’s appointment instrumental in enhancing regional representation. Furthermore, he stands at Sl. No. 11 in the all-India seniority list of High Court Judges, including Chief Justices, further solidifies his elevation suitability.

Collegium’s Decision

Considering his judicial excellence, vast experience, and the imperative for a diverse representation in the Supreme Court, the Collegium has unanimously resolved to recommend Justice Joymalya Bagchi’s appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
