Dharmashastra National Law University Hosts Successful Two-Day National Conference on Transgender Rights

Jabalpur – Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur, proudly hosted a highly impactful two-day National Conference on Transgender Rights, titled “Transcending the Binary: Exploring Transgender Rights,” on September 1-2, 2024.

The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Justice Dinesh Kumar Paliwal, Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, who emphasized the importance of promoting transgender welfare and suggested legal reforms to foster a more inclusive society. Prof. (Dr.) V. K. Ahuja, Director of the Indian Law Institute (ILI), New Delhi, also delivered a compelling keynote address, setting a profound tone for the discussions.

Diverse Discussions on Transgender Rights by Leading Experts

Organized by the Centre for Constitutional Law (CCL) at DNLU, the conference brought together legal experts, activists, and policymakers to address the challenges faced by transgender individuals in India. The hybrid event featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, and paper presentations, covering diverse topics such as legal frameworks, social challenges, healthcare access, identity recognition, and intersectional discrimination. Esteemed speakers included Dr. Veena Roshan Jose (MNLU Nagpur), Mr. Syed Raza Hussain Zaidi (Naz International), Ms. Ellis Kokko (University of Edinburgh), and other distinguished personalities.

Publication of Selected Papers to Contribute to Academic Discourse

A book of abstracts was unveiled during the conference, and selected papers will be published by Bloomsbury Publishing India Pvt. Ltd., contributing to the academic discourse on transgender rights in India.

Sensitization Session Promotes Inclusivity and Awareness

A sensitization session by the Armaan Foundation educated participants on fostering inclusivity, while Ms. Shivangi Joshi (Deputy Collector, Ministry of Social Justice and Disabled Welfare Department) shared practical insights into the legal protections available to the transgender community.

Successful Organization Through Dedicated Efforts

The conference, guided by Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice Chancellor, and Prof. (Dr.) Shailesh N. Hadli, Registrar of DNLU, was organized by the dedicated efforts of Ms. Bhagyashree Agarwal, Dr. Ashit Srivastava, and the students of the CCL.
