Justice M.K. Gupta Shares Legal Wisdom at NLU Prayagraj’s ‘Beyond the Judgements’ Series

Prayagraj, May 3, 2025 — “Dealing with sensitive issues requires years of experience, a solid understanding of the law, and a strong commitment to the public interest,” remarked Hon’ble Mr. Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, Senior Judge, Allahabad High Court, during the second episode of the flagship series Beyond the Judgements hosted by Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University, Prayagraj (RPNLUP).

This compelling episode, held under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor (Dr.) Usha Tandon, offered law students a rare opportunity to hear the reflections and experiences of one of the most respected voices in the Indian judiciary.

Launched on April 7, 2025, with Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Bhansali, Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, the Beyond the Judgements series seeks to offer law students a holistic view of the judiciary—not just from the lens of legal doctrine, but from the lived wisdom of judges. The initiative reflects NLU Prayagraj’s broader vision of nurturing not just competent lawyers, but conscious and compassionate legal professionals.

A Judge’s Journey: From Aspiring Engineer to Pillar of Justice

Justice Gupta’s conversation opened with a nostalgic recounting of his early career as a lawyer. He recalled with warmth the first case he argued—an experience that ignited his lifelong dedication to law and justice. Interestingly, he revealed that law wasn’t his first career choice. “I once considered engineering,” he admitted, but eventually found his true calling in the legal field.

Reflecting on his journey, he emphasized the importance of dedication, patience, and focus—values he said were “inculcated into his personality” and helped him sustain a meaningful judicial career.

Speaking Truth with Sensitivity

Justice Gupta discussed the judiciary’s role in handling complex and emotionally charged cases, asserting that judicial decisions must be grounded in deep legal understanding and public welfare, unswayed by media narratives. “Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” he said, reinforcing the bedrock principle of judicial impartiality.

On the issue of legal aid, he emphasized the significance of quality over quantity in representation, and urged future legal practitioners to recognize the human impact of every single case. “For those involved, it may be the only case that truly matters,” he stated.

Compassion Behind the Bench

One of the most powerful moments came as Justice Gupta recounted his visits to prisons in Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Meerut. These experiences, he said, profoundly reshaped his understanding of the plight of undertrial prisoners. “It deepened my empathy,” he reflected, highlighting the importance of compassion in judicial decision-making.

He also cautioned about the increasing reliance on technology in law and governance. While acknowledging the potential of artificial intelligence, he stressed the necessity of legislative oversight, especially concerning data privacy and misuse.

Life Beyond Law: Hobbies and Reflections

The session also offered a glimpse into the personal side of Justice Gupta. He shared that gardening and cooking are his go-to stress busters, offering solace amidst the rigours of judicial responsibilities.

In his heartfelt closing, Justice Gupta expressed his fondness for RPNLUP, saying it is “close to my heart,” having seen its journey from its formative days. Addressing students directly, he advised them to view legal education as a foundation for becoming informed and responsible citizens, not merely as a means to employment. Citing the inspiring success of women and first-generation lawyers, he encouraged aspiring litigators to pursue their goals with unwavering confidence.

An Inspirational Milestone

Justice Gupta’s candid and compassionate narrative left a lasting impression on the audience, especially the law students who found in him both a mentor and a role model. His appearance in Beyond the Judgements marks a memorable moment in the university’s journey toward shaping ethically grounded and socially aware legal minds.

For students, faculty, and legal professionals alike, this episode was not just a conversation—it was a lesson in humanity, integrity, and justice.
